When I am thinking of blog post topics I focus specifically on the things I do best. Talking about upcoming projects, highlighting my latest work, tutorials, and freelancing. These are the topics I go back to when I am short on other ideas. And believe me I am trying to think of other things to post. So with this in mind, let me divulge on the topics you should focus on when you run out of ideas.
Tutorials on Your Craft
Why not create tutorials on what you do best? Whether it be designing websites, developing a WordPress theme, or how to customize a specific WordPress theme… you can create a tutorial on whatever it is you are comfortable with doing and it will work. I recently did a post on Creating a Custom WordPress Loop using WP_Query. It was a basic and brief tutorial, but someone will definitely be able to find it useful. You can most definitely do the same.
Talk About a Product or Service You Love
Maybe you’ve been using a plugin or theme for a long time, but have never thought about writing a blog post about it. Well now is the time. It can also be something you just recently discovered and are starting to really get into. I’ve actually included this type of topic within blog posts that weren’t focused solely on highlighting products. My blog post on You Should Have a Job Board on Your Website was meant to talk about why you should have a job board. Within that post I also highlighted two job board plugins that I am familiar with. Another good example was a recent post where I Recommended Books for Freelancers.
Post About an Upcoming Conference
I don’t know about you, but I like to attend conferences like WordCamp and All Things Open. Maybe you have some conferences you like to go to as well. Write a blog post about them and why someone should attend, or write about what you’ve learned by going to that specific conference. It is a great way to highlight a conference that you enjoy going to all the while giving a nice recommendation on it for someone else to consider attending as well. I’ve done this in my post on Why You Need to Attend a WordCamp.
If All Else Fails…
If you are left with nothing after these topics, then do what I am doing and write a blog post about topics you should blog about when you run out of ideas.
